This dramatic carpet is from the Glouwa
tribe. These dominant people once controlled many of the mountain passes in the
Atlas ranges. They extracted very large fees to allow travelers to pass. These
people fell from power when the Europeans were expelled from Morocco about 1955.
They had made the mistake of siding with the French, who up until that time essentially
ruled Morocco.
This carpet has powerful visual impact. It is made from high-quality wool. About 50
years old, it shows a wonderful range of blues as well as blacks, yellow, and soft shades
of red. This is a nice example of the unique triple technique used by the Glouwa
people: tufted, flat weave, and embroidery.
Strong focal point for any room. Rare quality, 11 by 7 feet.
